So, what do we know about BBEdit Codeless Language Modules? The docs team I work on is standardized around BBEdit and Markdown, so I'd love to extend the Markdown module's syntax highlighting to include CriticMarkup marks. Combined with the next/previous scripts and the marks clippings, we'd have a pretty nice standard tool for working on plaintext documents together.

I took a look inside the BBEdit app bundle, but the Markdown module appears to be a binary file, so there's no cribbing from it. Would it make sense to take the existing CriticMarkup CLM and create a "CM Markdown" module with syntax highlighting appropriate to Markdown? Is this maybe already underway?

You've identified the nut of the problem. BBEdit syntax highlighting is very efficient because it is a compiled module (my layman's assessment). But it comes at the cost of basically writing a little application in XCode. BareBones provides good documentation, but it's a bit too much for us to work on right now. It will likely be at least another month before anything gets pushed out.
